http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-dnsind-test-tlds-10.txt reserves some top-level domain names for test and documentation purposes. These are: ".test" is particularly recommended for use in testing of current or new DNS related code. ".example" is particularly recommended for use in documentation or as examples. ".invalid" is intended for use in online construction of domain names that are sure to be invalid and which are obviously invalid. The ".localhost" TLD has traditionally been statically defined in host DNS implementations as having an A record pointing to the It goes on to say: The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) also currently has the following second level domain names reserved which can be used as examples. example.com example.net example.org As this seems an excellent idea for documentation purposes, can I suggest that the names test.XXX.au example.XXX.au invalid.XXX.au never be assigned by any XXX.au registry. XXX is, of course, .com.au, .edu.au, .net.au, etc. It could also be wise to exclude lcoalhost.XXX.au from allocation, if only because of the confusion that such an assignment could cause. Naturally, if the proposal is carried (however that is done now and in the future), it should appear in the policies for assigning names in each of the XXX.au domains.
