That's not an increase in value.  That's a potential increase in value only
realisable if they can find someone goose dumb enough to pay those prices.
They won't.

In these post tech-wreck times (i.e. if we exclude the crazy stuff that was
done back in the dot com hype days with other people's money) can anyone
find serious, verifiable instances of these sort of domain names changing
hands for anything other than trivial prices?

If people want a realistic handle of the value of domain names I recommend
they spend an hour or checking out the domain name auctions at
www.afternic.com.  Its pretty revealing - hardly any bids, very low prices.

Wanna buy 'esale.com' - they don't get more generic than that, do they??
Well, here's your chance - a day and a half of bidding left, 18 bids so far
have driven the price for this generic gem all the way up to....$8 thousand.
Whoooeee.  And that's an exceptional one.  Almost everything available for
under $200 bucks, and a single bid if they're lucky.  Probably put in by the
seller to kick things off.

Now that the temporary madness of the dot com boom is dead, the idea of
selling domain names - even generic ones - for large amounts of money is a
pathetic internet myth that can be classed with the spam get rich quick
schemes, chain letters, and miracle Hunza diet bread.
