This is a good point

The issue is more about the dilution of the value of .au.  The release
of new 2LDs will be a while off anyway. Members of this list are
concerned about the potential success if the existing 2LDs, let alone
new ones.

The point of increasing the number of 2LDs is actually meant to increase
the efficiency of finding what you are looking for. If .au 2LDs are used
properly, the segmentation will provide the obvious connection to the
information you are looking for.  

The concern is well pointed out, the protection of trademarks or simply
brands is ongoing concern for businesses. "What you mean, we have to get
another one". An example of this might be myer.shop.au, if this 2LD were
to be released in the future.

The success of the applications to auDA will answer these questions

Apart from the additional (IMO, negligible) load on DNS servers; more
varied domain names will make absolutely no different to the relative
difficulty of finding resources using the appropriate search engines.

More *resources* requiring indexing will slow searching down; but this
will happen regardless of whether the new resources are placed under new
domain names or existing ones.

It is the *content* that counts; not the domain name that it is
distributed from.
