Cheers David U.S. Will Renew ICANN's Authority The U.S. government will renew a California nonprofit's authority to manage the Internet's global addressing system, a top Commerce Department official said today. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A13478-2002Sep13.html Dot-Org Selection Process Criticized The process to determine which group will manage one of the Internet's largest domains is turning into a three-way dispute between a Virginia nonprofit that likely will win the prize, a handful competing groups and the Internet addressing authorities charged with making a final decision. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A12027-2002Sep13.html September Deadline: Can The ICANN Model Be Revised? On September 30, 2002, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the US Department of Commerce (DOC) and the corporation created to privatize the infrastructure of the Internet will expire. This corporation, known as ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has had a very contentious existence from its earliest days. On July 10, 2002, a US Department of Commerce official, Nancy Victory, sent a letter to ICANN. She wrote that the agreement between ICANN and the DOC "will expire on September 30, 2002 and in the coming weeks, the Department of Commerce will assess whether to renew, extend, or modify this agreement. To assist in this review process," Victory asked, "I request that you provide me with a report detailing ICANN's efforts in these areas, as well as any other information that might inform the Department in its decision-making with respect to this agreement." Victory said that the response to her letter should be sent no later than August 15, 2002. http://www.circleid.com/articles/2532.asp Sixth Update on .org Reassignment Process This is an update on the status of the evaluation of the eleven applications ICANN received from entities seeking to become the registry operator for the .org top-level domain on 1 January 2003, when VeriSign, Inc. gives up that role. Content management within the kids.us domain, however, goes beyond NeuStar's core competence as a registry operator and trusted neutral third party administrator of mission critical infrastructure. NeuStar can design, build, and operate the infrastructure for the kids.us domain, but seeks the guidance of community members, experts, and interested parties to formulate content guidelines and restrictions. We seek public input on our first discussion draft of content guidelines and requirements of this special domain. We invite all interested parties to comment on this paper at KidsDomainComments§NeuStar.us through October 11, 2002. http://www.neustar.us/kids/index.html Dot-Kid Tussle in Congress The manager of the United States' Internet domain asked Congress Thursday not to interfere with its efforts to set up a kid-friendly zone free of violence, pornography and other adult material. http://www.reuters.com/news_article.jhtml?type=internetnews&StoryID=1443748 http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,55131,00.html http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105-957878.html http://www.ispworld.com/Reuters/BreakingNews/091302_gt01.htm http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/techpolicy/2002-09-13-kids-domain_x.htm http://news.com.com/2100-1023-957775.html http://www.cw360.com/bin/bladerunner?REQSESS=ir4TQ635&REQAUTH=0&2149REQEVENT=&CARTI=115772&CARTT=14&CCAT=2&CCHAN=28&CFLAV=1 Domainz under fire over .maori.nz name ownership Domainz faces at least one legal challenge over its decision to revoke ownership of a number of new domain names registered in the new .maori.nz name space. http://www.idg.co.nz/webhome.nsf/UNID/52F56E60084D7647CC256C310010A180!opendocument Australia: The Launch of .au Dispute Resolution Policy (reg req'd) The .au Domain Names Dispute Resolution Policy (auDRP) commenced on 1 August 2002. On more than one occasion, I've come up with a great domain name for a site, only to find that someone else had already purchased it.
