Generic Domain Names...why does one company have 3000 of them?

Along with a lot of people on this list, I attempted to get a particular
domain name, and was unsuccessful, so I checked the generic name I was going
for (www.computers.com.au) thinking that it would be up and running by now
(otherwise what's the point of registering the damn name!), and lo and
behold, its not up. Its not even delegated to anywhere.

So I decided to do a little more investigating:
Whois Response for computers.com.au:

 Domain ROID: D0373508-AR
Domain Name: computers.com.au
Last Modified: 20-Sep-2002 07
Registrar ID: R00010-AR
Registrar Name: Melbourne IT
Status: ok

Registrant: EINFO PTY LTD
Registrant ID: ACN 087 684 786

Registrant ROID: C0986975-AR
Registrant Contact Name: Scott Hull
Registrant Email: scott§e-info.com.au

Tech ID: C0986986-AR
Tech Name: Scott Hull
Tech Email: techcontact§e-info.com.au

Name Server: ns01.ntconnections.com.au
Name Server: ns02.ntconnections.com.au

Hmmm....look at what I found on www.e-info.com.au

" Commercialise the EINFO eco system of 3000 generic domain names."

Now does this mean that they were successful in registering 3000 generic
domain names through Melbourne IT?
Is there a time limit on somebody actually *using* the generic domain
name(s) that they've registered?
