Internet Forum Wraps Up In Egypt
The fourth annual Internet Governance Forum wrapped up Wednesday in
Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. Among the major issues that the forum must
tackle at its fifth meeting next year is whether to continue the forum,
which was created following the United Nation's World Summit on the
Information Society in 2005. Sha Zukang, the United Nations
undersecretary general for economic and social affairs, sought feedback
on whether to continue the forum. After obtaining feedback, the U.N.
secretary general will make his recommendations in his annual report to
the General Assembly next year on whether to continue the forum.

Delegates from around the world are in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, this
week for the annual Internet Governance Forum. This is the fourth year
of the IGF, meetings started by the United Nations, the mandate of
which is to encourage discussion about cross-cutting international
Internet policies. The big question is whether this forum ought to
carry on beyond its five-year trial run, which ends next year. We think
it should.

Internet Governance Forum goes to Egypt and hits a few snags
It seems that no matter where, when and why, somebody has to make sure
a political statement is made. Now it seems that the United Nations is
also getting into the Internet debate and dipping its toes into the Net
Neutrality debate. The Internet Governance Forum is no different.
Funded by the United Nations, its political firestorms are no different
than those occurring daily at the World Headquarters in New York.

The Internet is supposed to be the one forum left that is without
government censorship. Tell that to China, which regularly censors
content that its citizens can access. Search for information related to

Governance Forum in Egypt this week, China is lagging behind, but he
says neutrality online is not as much a given as people think.

Domain Names as Property Subject to Creditor Claims ? Bosh v. Zavala
Most people take it for granted that domain names are property. As
such, there shouldn?t be much dispute that domain names are subject to
the claims of judgment creditors. But I?ve seen enough resistance to
this position that I thought a recent case was worth a quick mention.
This recent case (Bosh v. Zavala (08-CV-04851-FMC-MANx) (C.D. Cal.
Sept. 24, 2009)) also raises some interesting questions about the
mechanics of trying to use a domain name to satisfy a judgment. This
topic was also recently covered here on Domain Name News. For more
perspectives, see Marc Randazza?s post on this case here; see also NYT;
Deadspin.

DNS Survey Results Pandora's Box of Both Frightening and Hopeful Results, Says Cricket Liu
The fifth-annual survey of domain name servers (DNS) on the public

results"?was released today by The Measurement Factory in partnership
with Infoblox. Cricket Liu, Vice President of Architecture at Infoblox

Cookbook says: "Of particular interest is the enormous growth in the
number of Internet-connected name servers, largely attributable to the
introduction by carriers of customer premises equipment (CPE) with
embedded DNS functionality. This equipment represents a significant
risk to the rest of the Internet, as without proper access controls, it
facilitates enormous DDoS attacks."

Why Privacy On Internet Must Be Addressed
East Africans welcomed the undersea fiber optic cables with much
excitement and great expectations. When it comes to on line business
transactions, concerns about cyber security, legal and ethical issues
start to come up. The question of privacy must be addressed.
Constitutions, legislations and past court decisions have however
indicated that the right to privacy is not absolute and that privacy
must be balanced against the need of society.
