Internet pornography is about to spill over into real life
Online pornography is absolutely enormous business, but it's being hit with just
the same problems as other kinds of digital content: more and more people are

enthusiastic about it.

Advertising: Now we're really going places
When the film Minority Report was in cinemas in 2002, they called it science

Facebook Places Will Crush Foursquare
One of the odd aspects of the Facebook event launching the new Facebook Places
service was the participation, support, and partnership of competing
location-based check-in services. There may be some opportunity for a symbiotic
relationship with Foursquare, but more likely Facebook Places will make services
like it obsolete and crush Foursquare into a fine dust unless it implements an
aggressive strategy to stay relevant.

Three Ways Business Can Take Advantage of Facebook Places
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the new Facebook Places location-based

opportunity to build customer loyalty.

Foursquare: Who Elected Me Mayor? I Did
While Foursquare has been talked about in corporate boardrooms as the next big
thing in social media ? it has some 2.5 million users ? it has also spawned a
more trivial pursuit: a petty and vicious battle over virtual pieces of turf.
Strangers are locked in bitter rivalries. Workplaces have been carved up into
virtual battlefields. College campuses have become factionalized. Even some
homes have become social media minefields.

Mobile phones in South-East Asia: In a saturated market, firms need customers to

Take a taxi in Bangkok and the driver?s mobile phone is sure to chirp. A long

Once reserved for the rich, mobile phones are now ubiquitous in South-East Asia.

The Google/Verizon framework by Jonathan Zittrain
I?ve been trying to figure out what the Google/Verizon announcement means. It?s
not easy to do, in large part because the announcement doesn?t precisely
announce anything. It?s titled a ?legislative framework proposal.? That is, on
its own terms it?s not an agreement between two companies ? neither is bound to
do anything by it, which I guess is how they could deny last week?s New York
Times report about a ?deal on web pay tiers? ? but it does represent a meeting
of the minds between them about what ought to happen in the world, in particular
what American (and presumably others?) law should become here.

Q&A: Professor of Internet Law Jonathan Zittrain
Google and Verizon shook up the tech world last week when they issued a set of
proposals about net neutrality. Critics declared that Google, long a proponent
of net neutrality, had sold out its principles, and that, as a result, the open
Internet that we enjoy today would soon be a thing of the past. We asked
Jonathan Zittrain, a professor of Internet law at Harvard Law School and
co-director of Harvard?s Berkman Center for Internet & Society, what he thinks
of the proposal. He wrote us answers via email.

Round ten of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement negotiations in Washington
concluded on Friday with countries confirming progress on all fronts and hopes
to reach agreement on all remaining substantive issues at the next round in
negotiations in Japan in late September. While the joint statement is not yet
online, Reuters reports that the U.S. believes the remaining issues - including
the U.S. - E.U. divide over geographical indications - could be resolved at the
next meeting. The statement repeats earlier assurances about the impact on
fundamental rights, cross-border transit of generic medicines, and iPod
searching border guards.

Proposed WIPO Strategic Plan Shows Positioning For Uncertain Future
The importance of knowledge is increasing at a rate faster than patent offices
can keep up with the demands of new inventors, reads the introduction to a
proposed six-year strategic plan of the World Intellectual Property
Organization. Creators and manufacturers of knowledge products are rapidly
diversifying geographically, new innovation models are arising, and new demands
are being placed on protected works for use in technology transfer or for shared
global needs such as environmental sustainability or public health.
