Call for Papers: Global Internet Governance: Research and Public Policy
Challenges for the Next Decade
Internet Governance is an emerging international field of scholarship, public
interest advocacy, diplomacy, governmental and corporate policy-making, and
philanthropic investment. The problem of how or whether we should control or
regulate a communication medium that is decentralized and global is critically
important to anyone who relies on the Internet to communicate, mobilize
political action, run online businesses, purchase products and services or
access critical information services.

Evgeny Morozov?s new book ?The Net Delusion: The Dark Side of Internet Freedom?

Number crunch: the struggle to upgrade the Internet from IPv4 to IPv6
The Internet?s framers famously designed it without predicting much about how,
or how much, it would be used. For example, the network?s capacity was conceived
less in a count of precisely how many could participate at once ? the way
traditional phone circuits worked ? and more in flexibly divisible bandwidth. As
that bandwidth got saturated, it would degrade gracefully: data might move
slower for everyone, but no one would get an ?all circuits are busy? message. In
ways large and small, what animates Internet protocol design is a
procrastination principle: if something can work well, it doesn?t have to be
perfect, and not every problem or limit must be anticipated and preempted.
Potential but still speculative flaws can be fixed later ? possibly somewhere
other than inside the network.

Netcraft January 2011 Web Server Survey
In the January 2011 survey we received responses from 273,301,445 sites. nginx
once again saw the largest increase in market share amongst the top web servers,
gaining 0.88 percentage points or 3.59M hostnames. nginx now controls 7.50% of
hostnames in the survey, though only 6.12% within the top 1 million sites. 2.4M
of the additional nginx hostnames are hosted by Ecatel, which appears to have
migrated from Apache to nginx this month. nginx's growth in active sites is more
modest, adding 429k active sites, leaving nginx with a 8.23% share.

Abstract: The Internet deserves special attention in criminology as well as
criminal law and policy, because of several characteristics: it is global,
instantaneous, intrinsically transborder, digital, and enables automated
information processing. Because of these characteristics, the Internet provides
special opportunities to commit cybercrimes: crimes in which computer networks

Wikipedia - an unplanned miracle by Clay Shirky
Wikipedia is the most widely used reference work in the world. That statement is
both ordinary and astonishing: it's a simple reflection of its enormous
readership; and yet, by any traditional view about how the world works,
Wikipedia shouldn't even exist, much less have succeeded so dramatically in the
space of a single decade.

Wikipleadia: The promise and perils of crowdsourcing content
It may not stir up international outrage like its semi-namesake WikiLeaks, but
Wikipedia sparks debate. The free online encyclopedia, which celebrates its

the most popular destinations on the internet, attracting some 400m visitors a
month. It also faces serious charges of elitism.

In praise of Wikipedia: A celebration of an astonishing achievement, and a few
worries
The internet?s omniscience is one of its most useful and transformative
features. Whether you want to look up an obscure word or phrase, get a quick
briefing on an historical figure or dig into a little-known scientific or
political concept, help is just a click away. In part this is because of the
power and reach of Google?s search engine; but search is only as useful as the
information it retrieves, and for many common queries the top match will be an
entry in Wikipedia, an online, user-generated encyclopedia which celebrates its
tenth birthday this week (see article).

Escaping the walled garden of connected TV
One trend on display at last week's Consumer Electronics Show was the gradual
expansion in online content available on connected TVs. Major set manufacturers
continue to confine their sets to a walled garden of sites and apps that they
have approved, but the turf is expanding and the barriers to entry are dropping.
For example, manufacturers are making application development kits widely
available, instead of just providing them to selected software companies.

What is Evgeny Morozov Trying to Prove? A review of "The Net Delusion" by Milton

Evgeny Morozov?s new book ?The Net Delusion: The Dark Side of Internet Freedom?
