Is ICANN really that toothless?
A criticism that I often hear of ICANN is that it is a toothless body with no real ability to regulate the domain name system. A couple of recent episodes seem to indicate that ICANN actually takes enforcing rules very seriously.

Top 3 New Requirements to the TLD Evaluation Criteria and What They Mean for Applicants by Alexa Raad
Three sections of the redlined version of the Draft Evaluation Criteria for new Top-Level Domains (TLDs) caught my attention. It seems ICANN wants to ensure it has information to not only evaluate and score responses, but to conduct a post-launch analysis of the program's success in terms of expanded competition, consumer choice and trust. That additional information means more work by both the applicant and for ICANN. But it's a good move because pre-launch preparation and thought staves off mishaps and misfortunes later.

Many challenged my grim assessment early last year, when I called for America to develop a new strategy to address the kinds of cyberattacks that could cripple our nation?s infrastructure. ICANN RAA v Luxembourg Courts: EuroDNS Disputes 'Unfounded' Breach Notice
ICANN has accused EuroDNS of breaching their Registrar Accreditation Agreement according to a letter dated 20 April. The breach, disputed by EuroDNS, involves the domain name facebok.com, that a WIPO Panel ordered to be transferred to Facebook, the complainant. However EuroDNS finds themselves caught between a rock and a hard place with a court case initiated in their own country, Luxembourg, preventing them from doing so. Righthaven Defies Court, Ignores Domain Name Ruling
Last Friday, the Chief Judge of the federal court in Nevada, which is overseeing more than 200 Righthaven copyright cases, dismissed Righthaven's meritless claim to seize its victim's domain names. In each case so far, Righthaven contended that the mere hosting of any infringing material means that the entire domain name was forfeit to the copyright troll. Chief Judge Hunt rejected that claim, explaining that the "Court finds that Righthaven?s request for such relief fails as a matter of law and is dismissed."

When it became clear that 32-bit IP addresses just wouldn't cut it for a growing Internet, the Internet Engineering Task Force did what its name suggests and created a new version of IP. IPv6 has so many addresses that it will resist our best efforts to waste all of them for many decades, if not centuries.

Filtering the Social Web to Present News Items
News events as varied as the commercial jet landing in the Hudson River and the uprisings in Egypt have demonstrated that people armed with cellphones ? not professional reporters ? are often the first source of breaking news, uploading Twitter posts, photos and video to the Web. But the result can leave people drowning in too much information. ... Storify, based in San Francisco, is one of several Web start-ups ? including Storyful, Tumblr and Color ? that are developing ways to help journalists and others sift through the explosion of online content and publish the most relevant information. Children Fail to Recognize Online Ads, Study Says
A thin banner with those words, or some variation of them, appears on various game sites that are aimed at children and sponsored by food companies like General Mills. The companies say such banners alert players that the games are a form of advertising, meant to encourage loyalty to cereals or junk food whose images often appear somewhere in the game.

Abstract: Objectives? This report presents state-level estimates of the percentage of adults and children living in households that did not have a landline telephone but did have at least one wireless telephone. National estimates for the 12-month time period from July 2009 through June 2010 indicate that 23.9% of adults and 27.5% of children were living in these wireless-only households. Estimates are also presented for selected U.S. counties and groups of counties, for other household telephone service use categories (e.g., those that had only landlines and those that had landlines yet received all or almost all calls on wireless telephones), and for 12-month time periods since January?December 2007.

PRIVACY

Personal privacy is a thing of the past, so you'd better get used to it
Even super-injunctions can't stop us prying while our every movement is tracked by the phone in our pocket: Recent events in the high court suggest that we now have two parallel media universes. In one ? Universe A ? we find tightly knit groups of newspaper editors and expensive lawyers trying to persuade a judge that details of the sexual relations between sundry celebrities and a cast of characters once memorably characterised by a Glasgow lawyer as "hoors, pimps and comic singers" should (or should not) be published in the public prints. ... The omens are not good. Our attitudes to privacy are riven with what psychologists call cognitive dissonance, which is a fancy term for our ability to hold two contradictory beliefs at the same time. We claim to value privacy highly, yet increasingly behave, especially in our online lives, as though we didn't.

Network fixes: Every move you make
Wi-Fi or mobile connections do not care whether a user is standing still, running, driving at 100kph or sitting on public transport. This kind of flexibility comes at a price, though. Most devices in motion transmit more slowly than they could because they maintain connections to the nearest base station for longer than they optimally ought to.
