ITU's Toure: WCIT Talks Are Not About Internet Governance
An editor on our staff, David McAuley, was fortunate to obtain an interview last week with International Telecommunication Union Secretary-General Dr. Hamadoun I. Tour?. The U.S. government has hammered away at Tour? and the ITU all this year, accusing the international telecom body of using the upcoming World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT-12) talks in Dubai as a forum to wrest key internet governance functions away from the private sector (and the U.S. government). The accusations clearly rankled Tour?, who spoke at length about what WCIT is and is not about.

Join Global Advocates: Oppose Expanding ITU Authority to the Internet
Today, CDT is releasing a letter drafted and signed by an international group of NGOs calling on governments to reject expansion of ITU regulatory authority to the Internet. Addressed to member states and government delegations to the ITU conference, the letter also calls on governments to open their preparatory processes so that technical experts, academics, and human rights advocates may voice their concerns and ideas about the proposals, along with business and government entities.

Internet under threat from ITU's global treaty review, report claims
IT consultancy Analysys Mason has warned that the ITU's forthcoming review of the International Telecommunications Regulations could extend these to the Internet and that any such expansion is "not only unnecessary, but could harm the growth of the Internet in developing countries."

Internet growth driven by flexible governance, not restrictive regulation
Evidence shows that the current free model effectively promotes Internet growth and access in developing countries. A new report argues that any fundamental regulatory overhaul could halt such growth and find users cut off.

Internet Freedom in Democrat, Republican Platforms Is a Good Start by Edward J. Black, President and CEO, Computer and Communications Industry Association
President Obama met young voters on their own turf recently as he fielded online questions in an open, "ask me anything" Reddit forum. The event, which drew two million people to the social news site and crashed servers, illustrates the Internet's potential not just as a two-way communication medium, but as a way to change the relationship between the government and those they govern.

How Google could reshape online market research and micropayments
Eighteen months ago ? under non disclosure ? Google showed publishers a new transaction system for inexpensive products such as newspaper articles. It works like this: to gain access to a web site, the user is asked to participate in a short consumer research session consisting of a single question ? a set of images leading to a quick choice. Here are examples Google recently made public when launching its Google Consumer Surveys:

A Class to Teach You How to Use Google
Think you know how to use Google? Think again. One of the search engine?s biggest strengths is its simplicity ? type anything into the search box and you?re off. But people could get a lot more out of Google, the company says, if they learned a few expert techniques, like searching by color, time or image. So Google is offering a free online course to teach search skills.
