Thank you to Jan of Melbourne IT for clarifying this matter. I had mistakenly thought that the domain name had not been previously renewed. In fact, the free grace period expired in 1997. I guess the pricing will return to reasonable levels once AuDA sorts out the competition policy. Sorry to trouble everyone.
