> i use Melb IT to register a majority of > our customers domain names Do you have a ready prepared answer for when your customers ask you: "Why am I paying twice as much as necessary for renewing my domain names?" I've just phoned WebCentral - of whom I'm a customer - they host one of my .com.au domain names - and had a conversation along the following lines: Me to Webcentral Sales Drone: "You host one of my .com.au domain names. In the past, you've renewed that automatically as a Melbourne IT Reseller, and charged me $140 for the renewal. Now that the cost has come down to less than half that, what do you propose to do?" Webcentral Sales Drone "We're still going to charge you $140". Me: "Why? Who's making the decision not become uncompetitive on pricing" Webcentral Sales Drone "Gee, I'm not sure - I'll transfer you to our Domain Administration department." Me to someone in their Domain Administration department: "You host one of my .com.au domain names. In the past, you've renewed that automatically as a Melbourne IT Reseller, and charged me $140 for the renewal. Now that the cost has come down to less than half that, what do you propose to do?" Domain Administration department: "We think we're still going to charge you $140". Me: "But the cost of renewing domain names has come down by more than half. Who's making the decision to become uncompetitive on pricing?" Domain Administration department: "Let me transfer you to the head of the department" Me to Webcentral's Domain Administration Department Head: "You host one of my .com.au domain names. In the past, you've renewed that automatically as a Melbourne IT Reseller, and charged me $140 for the renewal. Now that the cost has come down to less than half that, what do you propose to do?" Webcentral: "We're aware of the issue. We're investigating our options at the moment." Me: "I understand that you folks host a helluva lot of .au domain names (40,000 or so, I believe) , and therefore would need to be confident that whichever Registrar you go with has the resources to handle your volume, but don't you think that when your customers find out that you're charging more than twice as much as the lowest available price, it might not exactly be a great marketing coup?" Webcentral: "Yes. We're in negotiations - they could be concluded shortly". My suggestion to any Registrars reading this list - if you 'ain't already in negotiations with WebCentral, pick up the phone NOW and make an offer to their Domain Administration folks - or miss out! Likewise phone the other hosting services, Connect, etc, etc. Regards, Mark Mark Hughes Effective Business Applications Pty Ltd effectivebusiness§pplications.com.au www.pplications.com.au +61 4 1374 3959 > -----Original Message----- > From: Alan DeBritt [mailto:info§webone.com.au] > Sent: Wednesday, 7 August 2002 10:57 > To: dns§lists.auda.org.au > Subject: Re: [DNS] Melbourne IT - slow speed, laxsecurity and > poorquality of service > > > I would just like to say i use Melb IT to register a majority of > our customers > domain names and have never had a problem.
