Ron, Dont have much time to yabber, have work to do, but, a couple of points. I was referring to all in general, not trying to rebut your statements, i think it is an excellent idea. The diversity of interest in the groups represented on this list, however, would make the resultant registrar suffer from too many cheifs and not enough indians syndrome. I would not become a reseller of such a scheme, as my confidence in the leadership of a community registrar would leave me to beleive that once interest was lost, it would collapse. (Interest being valued initially in saving a buck, as well as having greater flexibility) but once it was felt it became too much work for too little return, i do not beleive it would survive the first three or four internal disputes. Real world viability is unfortunately measured in dollars. It *must* be a commercial interest to remain viable, and hence stable. Again, just my 2 cents, im off to do some work now. :D -Sean. -----Original Message----- From: Ron Stark [mailto:ronstark§snapsite.com.au] Sent: Monday, 23 June 2003 3:12 PM To: dns§lists.auda.org.au Subject: RE: [DNS] More on the issue of reseller / registrar relationship It was never on my radar that resellers create their _own_ registrar. I think that doing so would considerably weaken any collective reseller position, and simply create the converse of the competitor scenario of which I've complained. Sean, if that's what you meant when you said that it's unworkable, then I'm with you. My interest is primarily in redressing resellers' currently weak position. In terms of auDA policy, resellers don't even exist. Consequently we have no protection through auDA whatsoever, other than in the realm of domain names. Our vulnerability . however, is peripheral to that. I believe that there are likely to be enough registrars who would agree not to compete in our territory, so we needn't compete in theirs. We need to help those "independents" to succeed - without them we're even more vulnerable.
